Overview

  • Berlin data protection commissioner Meike Kamp declared DeepSeek's app illegal for exposing user data to Chinese authorities.
  • Kamp said the startup ignored a May directive to exit German app stores or implement safeguards for local user data.
  • Under the EU’s Digital Services Act, Apple and Google must review the formal notice and decide how to comply.
  • Kamp refrained from imposing fines since penalties could not be enforced against the Chinese-based company.
  • DeepSeek’s R1 model has been praised for cost-effective performance and has faced prior restrictions in the US, South Korea and Italy over data privacy concerns.
