German Waste Agencies Issue Winter Rules to Keep Bins from Freezing

Crews will skip frozen containers with no follow-up pickup.

Overview

  • Waste services in Hamm and Unterallgäu issued new winter guidance on Nov. 24 and stressed that frozen or partially emptied bins will not get an extra collection.
  • Keep lids clear of ice and prevent sticking by placing a small stick or a piece of cardboard between the lid and the rim.
  • For biowaste, drain liquids and line the bottom with crumpled newspaper, egg cartons or cardboard, then wrap kitchen scraps in paper.
  • Skip plastic liners, including compostable bioplastic bags, in the biotonne, while using garbage bags is recommended for residual waste.
  • Position bins in a sheltered spot so contents stay dry for the vehicle hopper, and if a biotonne cannot be emptied, place a right-sized cardboard box with extra biowaste on top at the next pickup.
