German University Headcount Rose 1.7% in 2024, Driven by Non-Academic Roles

Fixed-term contracts continue to dominate academic posts.

Overview

  • Destatis reports 805,700 people employed at universities and university hospitals at the end of 2024, up by about 13,400 from a year earlier.
  • Non-scientific staff in administration, libraries, technical services and nursing rose 3.5% to roughly 379,500.
  • Scientific personnel remained essentially unchanged at about 426,200, a year-over-year increase of 0.1%.
  • The teaching load held steady with 6.7 students per teaching person in winter semester 2024/25, based on 2,864,100 students.
  • Among full-time scientific staff, 66% were on fixed-term contracts, and the cohort included around 52,100 professors and about 217,500 scientific and artistic employees.
