German Supercup to Be Renamed in Honor of Franz Beckenbauer

The DFB and DFL plan to rename the annual match the Franz-Beckenbauer-Cup, with its debut scheduled for August 2025.

The German Football Association (DFB) and the German Football League (DFL) have reportedly agreed to rename the Supercup after Franz Beckenbauer, who passed away in January 2024.
The newly named Franz-Beckenbauer-Cup will debut on August 16, 2025, featuring the Bundesliga champion and the DFB-Pokal winner in its traditional pre-season format.
This decision follows other tributes to Beckenbauer, including FC Bayern Munich retiring his iconic number 5 jersey and renaming a street near their stadium in his honor.
Initial proposals to rename the DFB-Pokal or the DFB Campus after Beckenbauer were considered but ultimately rejected for logistical reasons.
Beckenbauer, a two-time World Cup winner as both a player and coach, is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in German and international football history.
