German Sports Federations Call for Dedicated Sports Minister and Increased Funding

Leaders of Germany's top sports organizations urge the government to prioritize sports with a new ministerial role and a €2 billion annual funding boost.

  • The presidents of the German Football Association (DFB), the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), and the German Disabled Sports Association (DBS) have jointly called for the creation of a federal Sports Minister position.
  • Currently, sports policy in Germany falls under the Federal Ministry of the Interior, but the leaders argue for a dedicated role to better represent sports interests at the cabinet level.
  • The federations are advocating for an annual increase of €2 billion in sports funding to address infrastructure deficits and support grassroots sports development.
  • DFB President Bernd Neuendorf highlighted the lack of resources, noting that many children are unable to join sports clubs due to insufficient facilities.
  • The DOSB and DBS also aim to advance Germany's bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036 or 2040, following decades of unsuccessful attempts since the 1972 Munich Games.
