German Sparkassen Begin Phased Crypto Trading in App

The move gives retail customers regulated in‑app access to crypto via central custody to win younger clients.

Overview

  • First customers could trade cryptocurrencies in the Sparkassen app starting Monday, October 19, 2026, as the group enabled the new function at participating banks.
  • The rollout is phased with 30 to 40 additional Sparkassen expected to join each month and the association aiming to connect most interested banks by the first half of 2027.
  • The initial portfolio will include Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP (Ripple), Solana and Polygon, and customers can buy, sell and hold coins through the app.
  • Custody and technical services are handled centrally by Dekabank with Börse Stuttgart involved in custody arrangements, and the app shows explicit warnings about high volatility and the risk of total loss while offering no broad advisory service.
  • The Sparkassen hope low order fees (reported at €0.99) and regulated convenience will help reclaim younger retail clients from neobanks, but the move also widens retail access to a product the banks stress is highly speculative.
