German Skier Missing Since 1967 Identified Through DNA Analysis of Found Remains

Human remains discovered in August 2024 on a glacier in Tirol have been confirmed to belong to a man who fell into a crevasse nearly 60 years ago.

  • The remains, including a lower leg and foot, were found at 2,500 meters elevation in the Rotmoos Valley near Sölden, Tirol.
  • DNA testing conducted at the University of Innsbruck identified the remains as belonging to a 30-year-old man from Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany, who went missing in 1967.
  • The man fell into a glacier crevasse during a ski tour on Easter Monday in 1967 while ascending the Seelenkogel in the Ötztal Alps.
  • An extensive search at the time was hampered by poor weather conditions and the narrowness of the crevasse, forcing rescuers to abandon the effort.
  • Police confirmed there are no surviving relatives of the man, bringing closure to one of the region's long-standing missing person cases.
