German School-Route Accidents Rise 5% in First Half of 2025, DGUV Reports

DGUV urges child‑friendly street design to curb risks from crowded school gates.

Overview

  • Provisional figures show 42,303 incidents from January to June, counted when treatment was required or fatalities occurred.
  • Cyclists made up about 43% of cases, compared with roughly 11% involving car occupants and 9% pedestrians.
  • Older pupils aged 10–18 were most affected, whereas primary-school children had fewer incidents due to shorter, simpler routes.
  • Risk varied by region, from 6.4 accidents per 1,000 insured in Niedersachsen to 3.2 in Berlin.
  • A DGUV/Forsa survey highlights missing bike lanes and unmarked crossings as key hazards, frequent dangers linked to parent drop-offs, and support for Tempo‑30 zones, school‑route plans and designated drop‑off points.
