German Retailers Lower Own-Brand Butter to €1.79 After Lidl's Third Cut This Year

Lower raw-material costs are allowing a months-long retreat from last year's peak.

Overview

  • A 250-gram pack of German own-brand butter drops by 20 cents to €1.79, roughly a 10 percent reduction.
  • Lidl initiated the move with its third price cut of 2025, and Aldi Nord, Aldi Süd, Edeka, Rewe, Netto, Norma and Penny followed.
  • It was not immediately clear whether Kaufland would match the new price level.
  • Lidl cites cheaper raw materials for the reduction and is also lowering related items, including organic butter to €2.99 and its vegan alternative to the same price as butter.
  • Retail prices have been easing since February after hitting €2.39 in October 2024, when smaller milk volumes and lower fat content linked partly to bluetongue disease pushed costs higher.
