German Parliament Extends Four Bundeswehr Missions Abroad
The Bundestag approved the continuation of military operations in the Mediterranean, Red Sea, and South Sudan, securing their mandates until later this year.
- The Bundestag voted to extend four Bundeswehr missions shortly before the end of the current legislative period, ensuring continuity until new mandates are considered post-election.
- Two EU-led missions in the Mediterranean, including Operation Irini to enforce a UN arms embargo on Libya and NATO's Sea Guardian for regional security, were extended until November 2025.
- The Red Sea mission, Operation Eunavfor Aspides, was extended until October 2025 to protect vital trade routes from attacks by the Yemeni Huthi militia, with up to 700 German troops authorized to participate.
- Germany’s contribution to the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), focused on civilian protection and humanitarian aid, will continue with up to 50 personnel until October 2025.
- The extensions come as Germany remains the second-largest contributor to several of these missions, with decisions on further mandates deferred to the next government post-February elections.
