Armbruster, a World Cup leader with three individual wins this season, struggled with her jump, managing only 89 meters, which hurt her podium chances.
The rare mass start format, which begins with cross-country skiing followed by ski jumping, favored stronger jumpers and impacted Armbruster's performance.
Armbruster, who is balancing her athletic career with completing her Abitur, has additional medal opportunities in the mixed team event and another individual competition later this week.
