German Municipal Trade Tax Sets Fourth Record on Slim 2024 Increase

  • Statistisches Bundesamt reported municipal trade-tax receipts of €75.3 billion in 2024, up 0.2% for a fourth consecutive record.
  • Property-tax revenues rose more strongly, with Grundsteuer A at €0.4 billion (+2.9%) and Grundsteuer B at €15.6 billion (+3.8%), reflecting higher local multipliers.
  • Combined receipts from trade and property taxes reached €91.4 billion in 2024, an increase of 0.8% from the prior year.
  • Results varied widely across states, with declines in Sachsen-Anhalt (-9.9%) and Hamburg (-9.3%) and gains in Bremen (+13.5%), Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (+9.8%) and Rheinland-Pfalz (+9.0%).
  • Despite the nominal growth, municipalities recorded a record €24.8 billion deficit in 2024, and the Deutscher Landkreistag expects the shortfall to widen to roughly €35 billion in 2025.
