German Mothers File Nearly Three Times More Kinderkrankengeld Claims Than Fathers

Barmer’s 2024 data reveal that mothers claimed the majority of sick-child benefit days even after leave allowances were raised

Overview

  • In 2024 mothers submitted about 296,000 applications for Kinderkrankengeld through Barmer, compared with roughly 109,000 by fathers.
  • Of the 877,000 paid sick-child days, mothers claimed 648,000 days compared with 229,000 for fathers.
  • Since January 1, 2024, parents receive up to 15 days of Kinderkrankengeld per child, single parents up to 30 days, and those with more than two children up to 35 days (70 for single parents).
  • The benefit covers 90 percent of lost net wages for each legally insured child under twelve and allows flexible use of individual days.
  • Barmer CEO Christoph Straub said the enduring gap underscores entrenched gender imbalances in family caregiving responsibilities.
