German Metal Industry Achieves Historic Wage Agreement
IG Metall and employers agree to a 5.1% wage increase over 25 months, averting further strikes in the sector.
- The agreement includes a two-stage wage increase: 2% in April 2025 and 3.1% in April 2026, along with a one-time payment of €600 in February 2025.
- Approximately 3.9 million workers in the metal and electrical industry are affected by this new contract, which is set to be implemented nationwide.
- The deal was reached after an 18-hour negotiation session in Hamburg, marking a rare joint pilot agreement by the regions of Bavaria and North Germany.
- The contract also provides a €140 monthly increase for apprentices starting January 2025, reflecting a focus on supporting young workers.
- The agreement allows flexibility for companies in financial distress, providing options to defer or omit certain payments to manage economic challenges.
