German Industry’s Energy Use Rises 1.9% in 2024, Led by Energy-Intensive Sectors

The uptick follows steep declines in 2022 and 2023 during the post-invasion energy-price shock.

  • Total industrial consumption reached 3,343 petajoules in 2024, according to Destatis.
  • Energy-intensive branches used 2,738 petajoules, up 3.2% year over year, accounting for 81.9% of industrial demand.
  • The chemical industry remained the largest consumer at 27.9% with energy use up 7.1%, while mineral-oil refining rose 5.4%.
  • Non-energetic use of energy carriers as feedstocks jumped 13.3% to 10.5% of total industrial energy use, as 89.5% still went to power and heat generation.
  • Erdgas remained the top energy source at 29.2%, followed by electricity at 21.1%, mineral oil products at 16.5%, and coal at 14.5%, with government relief on industrial power prices planned from 2026.
