Overview
- The exhibition opened on June 19 at the German Hygiene Museum in Dresden and will remain on view until May 31, 2026.
- It was co-created with the European Solidarity Centre in Gdańsk, the National Museum in Wrocław and the National Gallery in Prague to offer a multinational perspective.
- The show centers on East Germany’s peaceful revolution, Poland’s Solidarity movement and Czechoslovakia’s dissident scene in 1989, highlighting nonviolent protest and mutual support.
- Multimedia installations critique contemporary misuses of freedom by illustrating how calls for liberty are sometimes leveraged to undermine free press, independent courts and minority rights.
- A public reading by Angela Merkel is scheduled for June 23 and a panel discussion titled “Über die Freiheit heute: Ende der Illusionen?” will follow on June 26.
