German Household Heating Costs Dropped Significantly in 2024

A warmer year and lower fuel prices led to reduced heating expenses, though costs remain higher than pre-Ukraine war levels.

  • Heating costs for households using gas or oil fell by an average of 12% and 8% respectively in 2024 compared to 2023, according to Verivox data.
  • The average gas price dropped to 11.05 cents per kilowatt-hour in 2024, down from 11.88 cents in 2023, but still nearly double the pre-Ukraine war level of 6 cents.
  • Oil-heated households saw average costs decrease to €1,629 in 2024, with the price of light heating oil falling from €104 to €99 per hectoliter.
  • Reduced heating demand due to warmer weather was a key factor in the cost decline, alongside lower fuel prices.
  • Gas prices have risen slightly at the start of 2025, with current rates for new customers averaging around 10 cents per kilowatt-hour.
