German Hospitality Turnover Fell in August, Destatis’ Early Data Show

The preliminary release points to a sharper drop in accommodation than in restaurants, with updates expected as late reports arrive.

Overview

  • Destatis reports calendar- and seasonally-adjusted real turnover down 1.4% from July, with nominal turnover down 1.2%.
  • Compared with August 2024, sector turnover fell 3.5% in real terms and 0.6% in nominal terms.
  • Hotels and other accommodation recorded a 1.8% real decline from July and 1.2% nominal, while gastronomy fell 0.6% real and 0.2% nominal.
  • Destatis classifies these figures as preliminary and notes it revises early estimates monthly, with July’s real change revised to +0.3% and nominal to +0.7%.
  • The office cautions that separate seasonal adjustments and differing methods can make hospitality figures diverge from tourism series, especially in summer.
