German Hiker, 25, Dies After 70-Meter Fall in Tyrol

Police say an app-led route onto unmarked, slippery terrain preceded the fatal fall.

Overview

  • The couple left their Mayrhofen lodging around noon on Sunday for a phone-app-planned tour toward the Stilluptal and Ginzling gorge.
  • Off any marked trail, they reached a steep slope of wet rock and moss, and the 25-year-old slipped during a retreat around 3:15 p.m., falling about 70 meters.
  • Her 26-year-old companion could not descend to her, called emergency services, and was hoisted out uninjured by rescue helicopter Heli 4 to Finkenberg.
  • An emergency doctor flown in could only pronounce her dead, with police citing polytrauma as the cause of death.
  • Bergrettung Mayrhofen and the alpine police completed the recovery and began standard inquiries, with a crisis intervention team on scene and no indication of foul play.
