German Highways Hit 480 Kilometers of Jams on Busiest Pre-Fronleichnam Day

Shrinking lane capacities from widespread roadworks are colliding with holiday return traffic on major routes.

Overview

  • The ADAC reported 480 kilometers of congestion on June 18 as commuters and early holiday travelers converged between 14:00 and 18:00.
  • Key autobahns including A1, A2, A3, A5, A6, A7, A8, A9, A61, A81, A93, A95 and A96 are among the most heavily impacted.
  • Full closures on A2 between Herten and Kreuz Recklinghausen and ongoing works on A46 at WuppertalDüsseldorf are intensifying bottlenecks.
  • Thursday’s Fronleichnam holiday should see reduced volumes before return traffic peaks again Saturday with Pfingstferien end and Sunday with Kurzurlauber arrivals.
  • ADAC recommends postponing departures to Thursday morning or later evenings to avoid Wednesday afternoon’s peak delays.
