German Highways Cleared After Series of Severe Crashes

Emergency crews have cleared tonnes of spilled cargo from rain-soaked highways; police are now examining vehicle defects, driver impairment and weather-related factors.

Overview

  • Between July 21 and 23, multi-vehicle collisions and truck rollovers on major routes injured multiple drivers, critically harmed two truckers and killed a motorist on the A20.
  • A 20-year-old lorry driver overturned on the A7 near Kempten, scattering 26.5 tonnes of splitter, while a pork-laden Sattelzug jackknifed at the Kirchheimer Dreieck and required an airlift rescue.
  • Heavy rain on the B178 in Görlitz caused a vehicle to skid into oncoming traffic, colliding with multiple cars and injuring two.
  • Police discovered alcohol and cannabis in a 43-year-old’s vehicle after his A96 rollover and detained another driver with over 1.1 ‰ blood alcohol following a crash on the B472.
  • As of midday July 23, most affected sections have reopened with lane restrictions remaining for cleanup, and authorities continue to monitor injured motorists and probe the causes.
