German Football Leadership Still Overwhelmingly Male With Only 6% Women

A joint DFL-DFB project will launch a women’s career fair after the FKM report exposed persistent gender imbalance in club leadership.

Overview

  • The FKM Lage der Liga report for 2024/25 finds women occupy just six of 100 top-management roles across 36 Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga clubs.
  • Only Schalke 04, FC St. Pauli, 1. FC Heidenheim and Werder Bremen have any female representation on their highest executive boards.
  • Of 19 new top-management appointments during the season, only one woman—Luise Gottberg at FC St. Pauli—was appointed.
  • Women hold 10.3% of seats in clubs’ control committees and 20% of direct-report positions, with SV Elversberg leading the second tier at 44%.
  • The DFB-DFL initiative “Dein Job im Fußball” will host its first women’s career fair on September 16 to attract more female managers.
