- He died Friday in Hamburg at age 86 with family present, his daughter told the German Press Agency dpa.
- He was celebrated for socially critical coming-of-age films including Nordsee ist Mordsee (1976), Moritz, lieber Moritz (1978) and Yasemin (1988), which earned a Bundesfilmpreis in Gold.
