German Film and Artists Advance in 2025 Oscar Shortlists

The German entry 'The Seed of the Sacred Fig Tree' and several German talents move closer to nominations for the 97th Academy Awards.

The German film 'The Seed of the Sacred Fig Tree,' directed by Mohammad Rasoulof, is one of 15 contenders for International Feature Film category, with final nominations set for January 17, 2025.
The film, centered on the Iranian protests following Jina Mahsa Amini’s death, was produced in Germany and highlights themes of resistance and freedom under censorship.
Oscar-winning composer Volker Bertelmann is shortlisted for his score in the Vatican thriller 'Conclave,' alongside fellow German Hans Zimmer for his work on 'Blitz.'
German contributions also include Gerd Nefzer's work on 'Dune: Part Two' for visual effects, Heike Merker’s makeup artistry on 'Maria,' and Jens Kevin Georg’s live-action short 'Kruste.'
The 97th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 2, 2025, with nominations across all categories to be announced next month.
