German Experts Urge Higher Mower Settings and Morning Watering for Heat-Stressed Lawns

Federal gardening centers are advising deeper, less frequent cuts alongside rainwater irrigation to safeguard drought-stressed turf.

Overview

  • Lawns should be mowed to a height of around five centimetres to shade soil and reduce evaporation.
  • Gardeners are urged to avoid cutting grass during midday heat and to schedule mowing for cooler evenings.
  • Deep, infrequent irrigation is recommended, with most watering taking place around 4 a.m. using harvested rainwater.
  • No more than one mow per week is advised during heatwaves to prevent blade stress and root damage.
  • All intensive maintenance tasks such as fertilizing, scarifying and overseeding should be postponed until early autumn.
