German Discounters Deepen Dairy Price Cuts as Kaufland Limits Butter Deal

Retailers point to higher milk output driving a correction from last year's peak.

Overview

  • Aldi, Lidl and other discounters launched a fourth round of dairy reductions this week, with cuts of roughly 7% to 25% on staples such as butter, milk and cream.
  • Entry‑level branded butter now lists at €1.29 for 250 grams at Aldi and Lidl, and both fresh and UHT whole milk are advertised at €0.95 per liter.
  • Aldi says more than 15 dairy items are now permanently cheaper, focusing on its Milsani private label and select organic lines, while Lidl has moved to uniform pricing and extended cuts across milk and cheese.
  • Edeka and its Netto arm, Rewe, Penny and Kaufland said they are matching comparable reductions, with Kaufland promoting Weihenstephan butter at €1.59, or €1.49 with its card, capped at five packs per customer.
  • Consumer advocates caution about potential longer‑term trade‑offs for shoppers, and the German Farmers' Association warns the price war risks pushing down farm‑gate prices.
