Overview

  • Cyclists must use designated bike paths only when marked by a blue sign; otherwise they may ride on the roadway, especially if the path is obstructed or in poor condition.
  • Riding side by side is permitted as long as it does not impede traffic, with unconditional allowance on bicycle streets and in groups of at least 16 riders.
  • In organized groups of 16 cyclists or more, those who have begun a crossing may legally continue through red lights, but solo riders must stop at all signals.
  • Cyclists are required to keep at least one hand on the handlebars and prohibited from operating mobile phones while riding, with fines of €5 and €55 respectively.
  • Riding under the influence is punishable from a blood-alcohol level of 0.3‰, with suspensions and medical assessments triggered at 1.6‰.
