Overview

  • The pair became stuck on the Gemelli del Breithorn during descent when their rope jammed, leaving them at roughly 4,000 meters.
  • Low visibility and worsening conditions repeatedly blocked helicopter approaches by Italian as well as Swiss rescue teams.
  • A ground approach was started but stopped because unstable snow, crevasses and avalanche danger made the route unsafe.
  • Rescue coordinators stayed in contact overnight and advised the climbers to shelter while they waited for safer conditions.
  • At about 05:30, a helicopter team recovered the two and flew them to Ospedale Parini in Aosta, where they were reported in good condition.
