Overview
- The pair became stuck on the Gemelli del Breithorn during descent when their rope jammed, leaving them at roughly 4,000 meters.
- Low visibility and worsening conditions repeatedly blocked helicopter approaches by Italian as well as Swiss rescue teams.
- A ground approach was started but stopped because unstable snow, crevasses and avalanche danger made the route unsafe.
- Rescue coordinators stayed in contact overnight and advised the climbers to shelter while they waited for safer conditions.
- At about 05:30, a helicopter team recovered the two and flew them to Ospedale Parini in Aosta, where they were reported in good condition.
