German Climber Falls to Death While Descending Nepal's Ama Dablam

Planned autopsy in Kathmandu underscores how brief guide separations on steep, technical terrain can be deadly.

Overview

  • The climber was identified as 57-year-old Wolfgang Waschiczek, who had summited Ama Dablam the day before and was reported missing while preparing to descend.
  • His guide briefly left him to return borrowed equipment and lost contact when he returned, a separation that preceded the fatal fall.
  • Rescuers spotted his body at about 4,500–4,600 metres near Camp 2 after what officials said was a roughly 1,500–1,700 metre fall and recovered the remains by helicopter.
  • The body was flown to Lukla and then to Kathmandu for a postmortem at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital and will be handed to his family through the embassy.
  • This is the first recorded death on Ama Dablam this autumn season, which has issued more than 300 permits, and the incident is likely to prompt fresh scrutiny of on-mountain safety and brief guide separations.
