German Climber Dies After 1,500-Meter Fall on Ama Dablam

Rescue teams recovered his body and flew it to Kathmandu for an autopsy while authorities and the expedition company investigate the cause of the fall.

Overview

  • The climber, reported to be 57 years old, reached the 6,814-meter Ama Dablam summit with his group and then died during the descent on Monday, according to the expedition leader.
  • A Nepalese guide told the climber to remain in his tent at Camp III (about 6,100 meters) while icy terrain was secured, and the climber was missing when the guide returned.
  • Search teams found the body roughly 1,500 meters below Camp III — reports place the recovery near 4,500–4,600 meters — and a helicopter transported the remains to Kathmandu for autopsy.
  • Some outlets named the deceased as Wolfgang Waschiczek and said he had borrowed gear before the night in Camp III, but those details come from single sources and are not yet independently confirmed.
  • Reporting on the incident is led by Real Himalaya’s leader and dpa accounts, officials are investigating, and the case comes amid other recent mountaineering deaths in Nepal this season.
