Overview

  • The share of Germans considering climate protection 'very important' has fallen to 54% in 2024, down from 65% in 2020, while an additional 34% view it as 'important.'
  • The study highlights a generational divide, with 63% of those over 65 prioritizing climate protection compared to 44% of 18- to 29-year-olds.
  • Healthcare (81%), education (77%), and internal security (71%) now rank higher in perceived importance than climate protection among Germans.
  • A strong majority links climate policies to quality-of-life improvements, with 92% supporting better access to healthy food, 89% to affordable green housing, and 87% to public transport.
  • Despite declining intensity, the survey finds no significant polarization on climate issues, with broad legitimacy for ambitious environmental policies remaining intact.
