German Cities Launch January Christmas-Tree Collections Starting This Week

Residents are directed to designated drop-off points and curbside pickups under strict preparation rules, with fines for illegal dumping.

Overview

  • Munich opens temporary public collection from January 7 to February 4, adds limited school and daycare drop-off days (January 7–9 and 12–13, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.), requires trees to be fully undecorated and plastic-free, offers a site finder, and provides a paid bulk pickup for property managers from January 20 to February 28.
  • Dresden lists more than 100 collection points through January 10 and allows free drop-off at recycling centers until January 31, routing trees for composting or biomass use.
  • Hamm’s waste service begins curbside pickups on January 7 by postal-code zones, with trees set out by 6 a.m., limited to two meters and without root balls, and completely cleared of decorations.
  • Chemnitz collects from January 5 to January 23 alongside bio-waste rounds; residents place undecorated trees beside the biobin, bundle decorative branches with natural twine, or take smaller cuttings to the bin, with free acceptance of larger cuttings at recycling yards.
  • Authorities emphasize that illegal disposal can trigger fines in NRW, zoos generally do not accept formerly decorated household trees, and garden experts recommend reusing only untreated trees for mulch or habitat.
