German Blood Reserves Fall Below Critical Threshold

Low supplies risk forcing hospitals to limit planned operations and heighten pressure on cancer and routine surgical care.

Overview

  • The regional blood service of the German Red Cross reported on Sunday, November 1 that stocks for Thüringen, Sachsen-Anhalt, Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern, Niedersachsen and Bremen have dropped below the DRK trigger of 10,000 units, which can lead to restricted deliveries to clinics.
  • Emergency care will remain covered but the DRK warned that scheduled and elective operations may be postponed as supply is rationed to urgent needs.
  • Shortages are most acute for blood groups O positive, O negative and B negative, with O negative especially critical because it can be used for any patient in an emergency.
  • Platelet concentrates are highly vulnerable because they last only about four days and are vital for chemotherapy patients, and donor rules that bar people for one week after mild infections or four weeks after fever reduce available donors during the coming cold and flu season.
  • The DRK says roughly 3,000 donations per day are needed across its area to rebuild a safe buffer, so it is issuing urgent public appeals for donors to restore component supplies that can help up to three patients from a single donation.
