Overview
- Qatar Museums announced Thursday that the hexagonal pavilion will open on November 20, 2026, will inaugurate alongside the new Rubaiya Qatar quadrennial, and will remain in Doha after the festival ends.
- The building was designed by Gerhard Richter in collaboration with Annabelle Selldorf’s firm and will sit in MIA Park next to the Museum of Islamic Art as a freestanding work of art and architecture.
- The pavilion’s exterior is wrapped in repeating motifs derived from Richter’s 2011 Patterns project, which itself came from digitally subdividing the 1990 canvas Abstract Painting into thousands of mirrored strips.
- Inside, visitors will see three large Strip paintings, a purpose-built Strip Tower sculpture, and two floor-to-ceiling Mirror works that use reflection to extend and multiply the images.
- Qatar Museums says it has acquired additional major Richter works and plans a large Richter exhibition, and the pavilion underscores Doha’s push to expand public cultural infrastructure and commission artist-led architecture that becomes a permanent public asset.
