Overview
- Qatar Museums announced Thursday that a permanent hexagonal pavilion by Gerhard Richter will be built in MIA Park outside the Museum of Islamic Art and will open on November 20, 2026.
- Richter is the lead designer and is working with Selldorf Architects to realize the building as a freestanding work of art and architecture.
- The pavilion’s exterior will be wrapped in repeating tile motifs drawn from Richter’s 2011 Patterns project, a digital method that subdivided his 1990 Abstract Painting into thousands of mirrored strips.
- Inside the compact gallery will hang three large Strip paintings, two floor-to-ceiling mirror works, and a purpose-built Strip Tower sculpture that extends the studio processes into three-dimensional space.
- The pavilion will remain in Doha after the Rubaiya Qatar quadrennial, signaling Qatar’s strategy of adding permanent, high-profile artist-designed commissions to its public cultural landscape.
