Gera Installs Sparrow-Motif Pedestrian Light

The new red-and-green sparrow replaces standard walking figures to link everyday street signals with the Goldener Spatz children's media festival.

Overview

  • The sparrow traffic light was inaugurated Friday, May 29, in central Gera and is now operational with a red sparrow to tell pedestrians to stop and a green sparrow to tell them to go.
  • Graphic professor and illustrator Thomas M. Müller from Leipzig developed the design and the installation was produced through cooperation between the Stadtverwaltung Gera, the Freundeskreis Goldener Spatz and local craft businesses.
  • Mayor Kurt Dannenberg framed the light as Gera joining other German cities that use motif signals, and Minister-President Mario Voigt said the installation brings the festival into everyday life and underscores its ties to the city.
  • The signal references the Goldener Spatz festival, which was founded in Gera in 1979, is judged by a children's jury, and will run from June 7 to June 13, 2026 with school groups and public screenings planned.
  • The sparrow follows a wider German practice of 'Motivampeln' such as Nuremberg's Dürer hare and Munich's Pumuckl, and organizers say the light is meant to boost local festival visibility and everyday civic engagement around the event.
