Georgia’s Christmas Forecast Calls for Near-Record Warmth, Not a White Christmas

A strong high-pressure ridge is expected to push Atlanta into the mid-70s on Christmas Day to challenge daily records.

Overview

  • Metro Atlanta is forecast to reach 73°F on Christmas Eve and 75°F on Christmas Day, levels that match the daily records set in 2016 and 2015.
  • Elsewhere in Georgia, National Weather Service outlooks call for highs near 74°F in Athens, 73°F in Savannah, 76°F in Augusta, 77°F in Macon, and around 70°F in Blue Ridge.
  • Forecasters expect no White Christmas under the National Weather Service standard of at least 1 inch of snow on the ground.
  • Georgia’s last measurable Christmas Day snowfall was on Dec. 25, 2010, the first such event in metro Atlanta since 1881 after a 129-year gap.
  • The 2010 storm brought about 1–3 inches to metro Atlanta and up to 8 inches in the north Georgia mountains after rain changed to snow, while this year’s pattern stays dry before rain returns Sunday and a cooler turn next week.
