Overview
- Walker County deputies responded around 9:50 a.m. to a Tarvin Road home in Rock Spring after reports of a child with a gunshot wound.
- Sheriff Steve Wilson said the father returned late on Christmas Eve and left his 9mm handgun on a bedroom nightstand.
- On Christmas morning the father heard a pop while dressing an infant in another room and found the 2-year-old crying and bleeding from a head wound.
- The child underwent emergency surgery at T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital in Chattanooga and remains in critical condition.
- The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting the sheriff’s office, DFCS placed the infant with relatives, and authorities have not released names as they work to determine how the gun fired.
