Georgia PSC Approves $5 Million Winter Gas Relief Package

The commission will draw on the Universal Service Fund to target low-income seniors enrolled in Atlanta Gas Light’s discount program.

Overview

  • The Georgia Public Service Commission approved the relief at its Energy Committee hearing on Oct. 22 to help with winter heating costs.
  • Half the money will support customers 65 and older with household incomes below 200% of the federal poverty guideline who are enrolled in Atlanta Gas Light’s Senior Citizens Discount Program.
  • Eligible seniors will receive an approximately $194 credit on November gas bills that will carry to subsequent months until the allocation is exhausted, with Atlanta Gas Light applying the credits.
  • HopeWorks will receive $2 million to repair or replace gas furnaces and water heaters for qualifying households.
  • The Salvation Army Utility Assistance Program will receive $500,000 for direct bill aid, and the package is funded by Georgia’s Universal Service Fund.
