Georgia Parents Identified in Alabama ATV Park Crash That Killed Two, Injured Seven Children

Investigators are focusing on speed, passenger load and the lack of restraints as they await toxicology results.

Overview

  • Authorities named the victims as Marcus Ragland, 34, and Ashley Brooke Hawkins, 31, both of Rome, Georgia.
  • Two side-by-side vehicles collided on Aug. 30 at Indian Mountain ATV Park; a RZR carrying nine people overturned, traveled about 150 feet and struck a tree.
  • Ragland, the driver, was ejected and died at the scene, and Hawkins died at a Birmingham hospital; the seven injured children are ages 1 to 12, with some later discharged.
  • Officials said none of the nine occupants in the overturned RZR were using restraints; the two people in the other ATV were uninjured and tried to render aid.
  • Four helicopters flew Hawkins and three children to Birmingham trauma centers while four other children were taken to a Rome, Georgia hospital, and the sheriff’s office continues to lead the probe in the remote crash area.
