Georgia Approves Wellstar’s $1.1 Billion, 230-Bed Acworth Hospital

The decision clears the key certificate-of-need hurdle despite objections from rival systems.

Overview

  • The Georgia Department of Community Health approved the project on Oct. 21, allowing Wellstar to proceed with a new regional hospital in Acworth.
  • The planned eight-story, 675,000-square-foot facility is designed with 70 emergency department bays and eight operating rooms.
  • The hospital will be called Wellstar Kennestone Regional Medical Center at Acworth and is expected to open in 2031.
  • Several competing health systems filed objections during the review, and the state said in its approval letter it expects the hospital to positively relate to the existing delivery system.
  • Wellstar projects the development will create more than 1,500 healthcare and related jobs and address future access needs across Cobb, Paulding, Cherokee and Bartow counties.
