Overview
- Mira starred for Miami from 1961 to 1963, leading the nation in total offense in 1963 and becoming a foundational figure in the program’s quarterback legacy.
- He was drafted 15th overall in the 1964 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers and, as a rookie, set a franchise mark with a 79-yard touchdown pass to Dave Parks.
- His NFL career spanned 1964–71 with the 49ers, Eagles, Colts and Dolphins, serving as Bob Griese’s backup in 1971 and not appearing in Super Bowl VI.
- After the NFL, he played in the CFL and the WFL with Montreal, Birmingham and Jacksonville, finishing as a player-coach for the Toronto Argonauts in 1977.
- Honors included induction into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame in 1973 and the Florida Sports Hall of Fame, and he carried the nickname “The Matador,” coined by Miami Herald writer Luther Evans.
