George Kooymans, Golden Earring Co-Founder and Guitarist, Dies at 77

His surviving bandmates will honor his legacy with a final January 2026 concert benefiting ALS research.

  • George Kooymans died July 23, 2025, at age 77 from complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, his family confirmed.
  • Kooymans and bassist Rinus Gerritsen founded Golden Earring in The Hague in the early 1960s.
  • He co-wrote the band’s signature rock anthems “Radar Love” and “Twilight Zone,” the latter peaking at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.
  • After his 2020 ALS diagnosis, Kooymans retired from Golden Earring and the group paused touring and recording.
  • The surviving members will hold a final concert in January 2026 with proceeds benefiting ALS research.
