Overview

  • NOAA confirmed a G3 geomagnetic storm on May 28 that cast the Northern Lights across 17 U.S. states and as far south as Italy.
  • Forecasts show active to minor storm levels persisting through the weekend with Kp indexes near 4–5, sustaining visibility in northern U.S., Canada and parts of the U.K.
  • Observers are advised to seek dark, north-facing locations between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time for the best chance to see the Northern Lights.
  • On May 30, photographers captured vivid aurora australis over southern Tasmania, South Australia and New South Wales.
  • The October 2024 solar maximum is expected to drive more frequent and intense geomagnetic storms through early 2026.
