Overview

  • NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a G2 moderate watch for the night of August 8 and a G1 minor watch for August 9 after an August 5 coronal mass ejection and coronal hole wind stream.
  • The geomagnetic Kp index is expected to peak at 6 Friday night, extending auroral visibility into parts of 16 to 18 northern U.S. states, southern Canada and northern U.K. regions.
  • Skywatchers are advised to head to north‐facing, dark‐sky locations between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., though a bright waxing gibbous moon and variable cloud cover may hamper viewing.
  • Satellite operators, communications networks and power grid managers have been alerted to prepare for manageable minor to moderate disruptions.
  • A coronal hole high-speed stream is set to prolong storm conditions into early August 9 and further CMEs during the waning Solar Cycle 25 could trigger additional aurora displays.
