GenZ 212 Protests Escalate in Morocco as Two Killed Near Agadir and Hundreds Detained

Authorities permitted some marches in a sign of openness to dialogue.

Overview

  • Local officials said gendarmes fatally shot two people in Lqliâa near Agadir during what they described as an attempted assault on a gendarmerie post involving arson and bladed weapons.
  • The Interior Ministry reported 409 people in custody after Tuesday’s unrest, nearly 300 injured—mostly security personnel—and more than 140 police vehicles burned along with attacks on banks and public offices in cities including Oujda and Inzegane.
  • Judicial proceedings are moving ahead, with a first group of 37 defendants due in court from October 7 and a second group of 97 people also referred to trial, according to defense lawyer Souad Brahma.
  • For the first time, some demonstrations were officially authorized in cities such as Casablanca, Tangier and Tetouan, where protesters denounced corruption and, in Casablanca, called for Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch’s departure, AFP observed.
  • The decentralized GenZ 212 collective, organized on platforms like Discord, says it rejects violence and seeks reforms to health and education after reports of eight maternal deaths in Agadir, while the governing coalition says it is listening to social demands.
