Genting Highlands Starts Private Road Charge on May 28

Lingkaran Cekap says the fee will fund mounting maintenance costs using card taps, licence-plate recognition and special lanes.

Overview

  • Lingkaran Cekap confirmed charges begin Thursday, May 28, with payments collected at Genting Sempah and the Gohtong Jaya roundabout.
  • Standard rates are set by vehicle class: RM5 for cars and buses, RM3.30 for taxis, RM15 for medium lorries and RM25 for heavy lorries, payable per entry by tapping Touch ’n Go or credit and debit cards.
  • Motorcycles and emergency vehicles are exempt without registration while private cars of designated public servants are exempt only after registration and use of LPR or the special lanes.
  • Classes 2–5 vehicles must use designated “Lorong Khas” lanes or the licence-plate recognition (LPR) system for entry, and a resident concession phase begins June 28 offering a 10% discount or a six‑month unlimited season pass for up to two Class 1 vehicles per household.
  • The operator says the charge implements a ‘user‑pays’ model to cover steep upkeep on the privately owned 24km Jalan Genting Highlands, a road Genting Malaysia has maintained since the 1960s and which heavy tourist and commercial traffic has worn down.
