Genoa Dockworkers Block Leonardo Cannon Loading, Port Authority Agrees Military Traffic Observatory Talks

Refusing work on weapons deemed a risk to port safety, dockworkers secured the cannon’s removal ahead of September talks on a permanent military-traffic observatory.

Overview

  • On August 8, the maritime agency managing Bahri Yanbu confirmed that the Leonardo cannon bound for Abu Dhabi will remain ashore as the ship departs Genoa.
  • Dockworkers from Cgil, Cisl, Uil, Calp and Usb unions invoked conscientious objection to prevent the cannon’s loading, upholding a 2019 pledge against war shipments.
  • The Italian Port Authority has agreed to hold a September meeting with the city, prefecture and Coast Guard to discuss establishing a permanent military-traffic observatory.
  • The Genoa prosecutor’s office opened an investigation into possible violations of Law 185/1990 governing arms transit and has tasked Digos and the Coast Guard with inquiries.
  • Unions and allied activists have announced further protests to demand greater transparency and enforcement of national arms-transit regulations.
