Genetic Test Rule Sidelines French Women at World Boxing Worlds and Leaves Khelif Out

CAS left the policy in effect by declining to grant interim relief.

Overview

  • France’s federation said privacy laws prevented testing at home and results from a UK lab arrived too late, leading to the exclusion of five boxers from the Liverpool championships.
  • World Boxing said national federations were responsible for arranging tests and noted it warned on Aug. 21 that results could take up to 48 hours and late testing could jeopardize entries.
  • Olympic welterweight champion Imane Khelif’s appeal against the requirement is pending at CAS, her hearing was not scheduled in time, and she was not entered for the event after interim suspension was denied.
  • Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting, another Paris 2024 gold medallist previously caught in eligibility disputes, was also not entered for Liverpool.
  • World Boxing’s policy requires female athletes aged 18 and over to provide a PCR-based SRY genetic test certification for eligibility at its events, including the Sept. 4–14 world championships in Liverpool.
