Genesis Rules Out IMSA GTP Debut Until 2028

The team says it will concentrate on consolidating its FIA World Endurance Championship program to fix reliability issues and use a planned Austin activation to test U.S. demand before committing to IMSA.

Overview

  • Genesis Magma Racing has formally abandoned plans to enter the IMSA WeatherTech GTP class in 2027 and now targets 2028 at the earliest.
  • Team principal Cyril Abiteboul said the priority is to stabilise the GMR-001 LMDh programme in the FIA World Endurance Championship before allocating resources to a U.S. campaign.
  • The programme has relied heavily on in-house development, which Abiteboul says has required extra time, management attention and money and slowed expansion plans.
  • Genesis will use the WEC visit to Circuit of The Americas and a large Austin brand activation later this year to measure fan engagement, commercial interest and the case for IMSA entry.
  • Acura’s decision to pause its GTP effort and reduced long‑race mileage for Genesis have changed the competitive and commercial calculus for IMSA and delayed selection of any GTP service partner.
